A rather distinct although not unique characteristic of COVD-19 – either in the disease itself or the body’s immune system response to it – is the effect on the gustatory or olfactory system. If your sense of smell or taste has recently changed or in the case of the latter you experienced a genuine loss of appetite, you may well have had COVID-19 and recovered.
We have been speaking with as many people we know who have tested positive for the virus and then had the disease (allowing for the fact that the majority of those who contract the virus are asymptomatic, i.e. don’t even know they had it), and a high proportion of those individuals reported that either their sense of smell or taste ‘went’ or ‘changed’ for a period of days.
