It is a virus not the virus.

Most individuals will contract a virus from at least one of the four coronavirus genera many times throughout in their lifetime, with alphacoronaviruses HCoV-229E and HCoV-NL63, and betacoronaviruses HCoV-HKU1 and HCoV-OC43 causing the common cold.

Within the fours genera there are at least 23 specific known species of virus and with serotypes and probable species, the total is closer to 50. So the constant reference to ‘the coronavirus’ and ‘the coronavirus outbreak’ is incorrect as there are more than one of them. It is β-coronavirus sarbecovirus SARS-CoV-2 to be accurate. Referring to something as ‘the’ rather than ‘a’ makes it sound unique and somehow scarier. Referring to something as ‘a’ means there are others like it, it is not unique and by implication is not as scary.

Next, COVID-19 is the diseaseThe virus is SARS-CoV-2.  The NHS and everyone else referring to COVID-19 infers that everyone who has had the virus has had the disease, which is not true.
